Install OTOO on your Fire TV Stick
OTOO is not in the Amazon Appstore yet, so it is installed by hand with the free Downloader app. It takes about five minutes. Start by checking which device you have — not every Fire TV can do this.
First: which Fire TV do you have?
Amazon now sells two different kinds of Fire TV. The older ones run Fire OS and can install OTOO. The newest sticks run Vega OS, which cannot install apps from outside the Amazon Appstore at all — no setting, no workaround.
Not sure? Check on the device itself
On the Fire TV open Settings → My Fire TV → About. If the software version starts with a 1, you have Vega OS and cannot install OTOO this way. If it starts with 5, 6, 7, 8 or 14, you have Fire OS and the steps below will work.
| Device | Year | System |
|---|---|---|
| Fire TV Stick 4K Plus | 2025 | Fire OS 8 |
| Fire TV Stick HD (1st gen)Wi-Fi 5, squared corners, no "Fire TV" text on the stick. | 2024 | Fire OS 7 |
| Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd gen) | 2023 | Fire OS 8 |
| Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd gen) | 2023 | Fire OS 8 |
| Fire TV Cube (3rd gen) | 2022 | Fire OS 7 |
| Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st gen) | 2021 | Fire OS 7 |
| Fire TV Stick (3rd gen) & Fire TV Stick Lite | 2020 | Fire OS 7 |
| Fire TV Cube (2nd gen) | 2019 | Fire OS 7 |
| Fire TV Stick 4K (1st gen) | 2018 | Fire OS 6/7 |
| Fire TV Cube (1st gen) | 2018 | Fire OS 6 |
| Fire TV Stick (2nd gen)Old and slow, but OTOO installs — the app supports 32-bit devices. | 2016 | Fire OS 5 |
| Fire TV smart TVs (Fire TV built-in / Fire TV Edition)The settings section has a different name on these — see step 1. | 2017+ | Fire OS 6–8 |
These all run Fire OS — OTOO installs on every one of them.
| Cannot install OTOO this way | Year | System |
|---|---|---|
| Fire TV Stick HD (2nd gen)Shares its name with the 2024 model. This one has Wi-Fi 6, rounded corners and "Fire TV" printed on the stick. | 2026 | Vega OS |
| Fire TV Stick 4K SelectThe first Vega stick. Not to be confused with the 4K Plus of the same year, which is Fire OS. | 2025 | Vega OS |
These run Vega OS, which is not Android and does not allow installing apps from outside the Amazon Appstore. Every Fire TV Stick Amazon releases from now on will be this kind. We are working on a version for them.
The five steps
Everything below happens on the Fire TV itself, using the remote. You do not need a computer or a phone.
The menu names below are written exactly as they appear on the device, in English. Fire TV offers its interface in only a handful of languages, so the names on your screen may not match the language of this page — look for these words as they are printed here.
-
Show the hidden developer menu
On recent Fire TV software this menu is hidden. Open Settings → My Fire TV → About, highlight the first line (your device name) and press the select button on the remote seven times. A short message confirms it, then press Back — the menu Developer options is now in the list.
On older devices that menu is visible already — if you can see it, skip this step. On a Fire TV smart TV the section is called Device & Software instead of My Fire TV.
-
Install the Downloader app
From the Fire TV home screen, search for Downloader and install it from the Amazon Appstore. It is free. This is the app that will fetch OTOO for you.
-
Allow Downloader to install apps
Open Settings → My Fire TV → Developer options. Depending on how old your Fire TV software is, you will see one of these two things:
Install unknown apps A list of apps. Find Downloader in the list and switch it on.Apps from Unknown Sources A single on/off switch. Turn it on. -
Open Downloader and type the address
In the Downloader address box, enter exactly this and start the download:
otoo.app/fire
No “www”, no “https”. The download is about 66 MB, so give it a minute on a slow connection. When it finishes, confirm the install. You can delete the downloaded file afterwards when Downloader offers to.
-
Open OTOO and add your playlist
OTOO appears at the end of your app list on the Fire TV home screen — hold the Home button and choose Apps if you cannot see it. Open it and note the device code on the start screen, then add your own M3U or Xtream playlist to that code at otoo.app. Until you do, OTOO shows a small demo library of freely licensed films so you can try the interface.
